House Speaker Hastert
and Senate Majority Leader Lott Asked to Investigate Architect Hantman
Groups Charge Lax
Enforcement of Congressional Accountability Act, OSHA Safety Standards,
and Failed Recycling Program
WHAT: |
Several environmental
and recycling organizations will hold a news conference October 2,
2000 at the National Press Club calling for a joint House and Senate
investigation of Architect of the Capitol Alan Hantman for alleged
violation section 215 of the Congressional Accountability Act, regarding
continuing OSHA work place safety violations, and mismanagement of
the Office Waste Recycling Program. "Congress Caught on Video" will
be shown, documenting recycled paper contamination, trashed recyclables
and worker safety problems.
Gannett News Service reported on September 25: 'A spokesman for the
Architect of the Capitol, which runs Congress' recycling program,
did not dispute the $1.5 million loss to taxpayers. "If we had had
a perfect recycling program, we would have received that much more
money for the U.S. treasury," acknowledged Bruce Milhans, communications
officer for the architect's office. "It's fair to say that our program
could be more efficient."
The groups charge that mismanagement over the past 5 years actually
cost taxpayers much more than previously thought and will present
new documentation. |
