Not since
Reagan appointed James Watt and Anne Gorsuch to implement his reactionary
agenda to openly undermine the nation's environmental laws has America's
conservation heritage been under such concerted attack. While George
W. Bush has attempted to keep his real plans in the backroom out
of public view, his appointee's deregulatory agenda has become increasingly
apparent. After nearly 30 years of using national standards in order
to prevent a state by state race to the bottom, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) is now proposing to deregulate minimum federal
criteria for permitting municipal landfills.
